Details

Originating from the island of Java, Batik is a traditional fabric dyeing technique using a tool called tjanting (canting) or a tjap (cap) printing block to apply hot wax in elaborate patterns. The wax serves as a barrier, preventing dye from reaching certain areas of the fabric. Celebrated for its artistic and cultural significance, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia, Batik adorns traditional attire and plays a role in various ceremonial contexts. It is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Join us for a 3 hour meditative workshop and immerse yourself in this captivating technique. We will introduce you to the fundamentals, including the proper use of the tjanting. You will also learn various coloring techniques to bring out the details and beauty of your batik painting. Don’t miss this chance to learn a culturally rich skill! All materials are provided - wax, tjanting, and dye. We have a 7 inch 100% cotton canvas for practice - your main piece will be on a 12 inch canvas including embroidery ring for you to take home.
